BMI FAQs
What is BMI?
BMI stands for Body Mass Index. It's a simple number calculated from your weight and height using the formula weight ÷ height² — kilograms divided by meters squared in metric, or 703 × pounds ÷ inches² in imperial. It gives a quick, standardized way to see which general weight category you fall into.
What is a healthy BMI range?
According to the World Health Organization, a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered the healthy range for most adults. Below 18.5 is underweight, 25–29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is obese. But these are population-level guidelines — context matters, and individuals vary.
What are the limitations of BMI?
BMI doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat, so athletes with a lot of muscle can score as "overweight" while being perfectly healthy. It also doesn't account for age, sex, body-fat distribution, or bone density. Treat it as a starting point — see your doctor for a full picture of your health.
