CASE FILE 01 · CHICAGO, USA · NOVEMBER 22, 1987

The Max Headroom Hijack

Someone hijacked two TV stations, live, in front of thousands of viewers — wearing a rubber mask. The FBI never found them.

✓ VERIFIED TRUE — documented real event

DEPTH 250 M

On November 22, 1987, during the sports segment on Chicago's WGN, the broadcast suddenly cut to a figure in a Max Headroom mask, swaying in front of a sheet of corrugated metal, rocking back and forth. No audio. Station engineers killed it in about 30 seconds by switching transmitters.

DEPTH 500 M

Two hours later it happened again — this time on WTTW, during Doctor Who. For 90 seconds the masked figure spoke in garbled, distorted audio: ranting about "the world's greatest newspaper nerds," holding up a Pepsi can and shouting "Catch the wave!," humming the Clutch Cargo theme — and being spanked on camera by an accomplice in a French maid outfit.

DEPTH 750 M

Here's what makes it genuinely unsettling: this took real expertise. Overpowering a broadcast signal required a high-powered microwave transmitter aimed precisely at the stations' tower links, plus knowledge of their frequencies and equipment. This wasn't a kid with a prank — it was a technically sophisticated federal crime, committed live, in America's third-largest TV market.

DEPTH 1000 M — THE BOTTOM

The FBI investigated. The stations offered rewards. Tips poured in. Nobody was ever caught, charged, or credibly identified. Nearly forty years later, no one knows who was behind the mask, who the "French maid" was, or why they did it. The signal came out of nowhere — and went back.

CASE FILE 02 · URAL MOUNTAINS, USSR · FEBRUARY 1959

Dyatlov Pass

Nine experienced hikers fled their tent in the night — cutting their way out from the inside. They were found in their underwear, a mile away, in −30° cold.

✓ VERIFIED TRUE — documented real event

DEPTH 250 M

Igor Dyatlov led nine experienced hikers into the northern Urals. When they missed their check-in, searchers found their tent on February 26 — collapsed, empty, and slashed open from the inside. Footprints led downhill toward the trees: some in socks, some in one boot, one set barefoot.

DEPTH 500 M

Two bodies were found beneath a cedar tree, in their underwear, beside the remains of a small fire — as if they'd tried desperately to stay warm. Three more lay between the tree and the tent, posed as though crawling back. Months later, the final four were discovered in a ravine: skulls crushed, ribs broken — injuries one forensic expert compared to a car crash. One of them was missing her eyes and tongue.

DEPTH 750 M

The details kept getting stranger. Traces of radiation were found on some of their clothing. Other groups in the area that month reported glowing orange spheres drifting in the night sky. The official 1959 Soviet investigation blamed "a compelling natural force," closed the case — and sealed the files for decades.

DEPTH 1000 M — THE BOTTOM

In 2019 Russia reopened the case and concluded: avalanche. A 2021 study showed a rare "slab avalanche" could explain the broken bones. But no avalanche debris was ever found at the camp. The radiation was never explained. The missing tongue was never explained. The lights were never explained. Nine people ran from something in the dark — and we still don't know what it was.

CASE FILE 03 · BAVARIA, GERMANY · MARCH 1922

Hinterkaifeck

Footprints in the snow led from the forest to the farm — but none led back. Six people were murdered. And someone stayed in the house for days afterward.

✓ VERIFIED TRUE — documented real event

DEPTH 250 M

In the days before the murders, farmer Andreas Gruber told neighbors about strange happenings: footprints in the snow leading from the forest to the farm — but none leading away. A newspaper he never bought appeared on the property. A set of house keys went missing. The family's new maid quit, saying the farm was haunted.

DEPTH 500 M

On the evening of March 31, 1922, someone lured the family into the barn one by one — Andreas, his wife, their daughter Viktoria, and 7-year-old Cäzilia — striking each down with a mattock, a kind of pickaxe. Then the killer walked into the house and murdered 2-year-old Josef and the new maid in their beds.

DEPTH 750 M

Here is the part that will stay with you: the killer didn't leave. In the days after the murders, neighbors saw smoke rising from the farm's chimney. Food had been eaten in the kitchen. The cattle — animals only the family tended — had been fed and milked. Someone lived in that house, alongside six bodies, for days.

DEPTH 1000 M — THE BOTTOM

Over a hundred suspects were questioned and no one was ever convicted. The victims' skulls were sent to Munich for examination — and lost in the chaos of the Second World War. The farm itself was demolished a year later. Whoever walked out of that forest, stayed for dinner, and walked back into it was never found.

CASE FILE 04 · NITERÓI, BRAZIL · AUGUST 1966

The Lead Masks Case

Two men climbed a hill wearing lead masks over their eyes. A note said: "cover your face and wait for the mask signal." No one knows what the signal was.

✓ VERIFIED TRUE — documented real event

DEPTH 250 M

On August 20, 1966, a boy flying a kite on Vintem Hill found two dead men: Manoel Pereira da Cruz and Miguel José Viana, electronics technicians. They wore suits and waterproof coats — and crude handmade masks of lead over their eyes, the kind of shielding used against radiation.

DEPTH 500 M

Beside them lay a notebook with a handwritten note: "Be at the agreed place, cover your face and wait for the mask signal." They had no visible injuries. No signs of violence. And despite an autopsy, no cause of death could ever be determined.

DEPTH 750 M

It gets stranger. Days earlier, the two men had been seen at the same hill, apparently attempting the same thing — waiting for something that never came. They told their families they were going to buy work supplies. On the way, they bought the waterproof coats. And the lead.

DEPTH 1000 M — THE BOTTOM

The men were linked to a "scientific spiritualism" group, and friends said they had been trying to make contact with beings from another world — possibly involving capsules of some kind, though 1960s toxicology could never confirm it. The case was closed, unsolved. Whatever signal they climbed that hill to wait for — it never officially arrived.

CASE FILE 05 · FAYETTEVILLE, WEST VIRGINIA · CHRISTMAS 1945

The Sodder Children

Five children vanished from a burning house on Christmas Eve. No bones were ever found. Twenty-three years later, a photograph arrived in the mail.

✓ VERIFIED TRUE — documented real event

DEPTH 250 M

Just after midnight on Christmas 1945, the Sodder family home caught fire. George and Jennie Sodder and four of their children escaped. Five children — Maurice, Martha, Louis, Jennie, and Betty, ages 5 to 14 — were never seen again. The house burned to the ground in under an hour.

DEPTH 500 M

The official story: the children died in the fire. But no bones were ever recovered — and the fire chief later admitted his claim that the fire had "cremated" them wasn't true. A fire that hot, that fast, would still leave bones behind. The family sifted the ashes themselves. There was nothing.

DEPTH 750 M

The night was full of wrongness. Threatening phone calls in the weeks before. A stranger asking questions about the house. That night: the family's truck wouldn't start, though it had run fine that day. A ladder normally kept against the house was found thrown down an embankment. And weeks earlier, a visiting "insurance salesman" had warned George his house "would go up in smoke" — and his children "would be destroyed."

DEPTH 1000 M — THE BOTTOM

The Sodders never accepted the official story and kept a billboard up for decades. Then, in 1968 — twenty-three years later — Jennie received an envelope containing a photo of a young man. On the back, handwriting: "Louis Sodder. I love brother Frankie." The family was convinced it was Louis, grown up. It was never confirmed. George died in 1969, Jennie in 1989 — never knowing.

CASE FILE 06 · YUBA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA · FEBRUARY 1978

The Yuba County Five

Five friends drove home from a basketball game and turned the wrong way — up a mountain road, into the snow. Their car was found undamaged. One of them starved to death in a trailer full of food.

✓ VERIFIED TRUE — documented real event

DEPTH 250 M

On February 24, 1978, five men — Gary Mathias, Jack Madruga, Bill Sterling, Jack Huett, and Ted Weiher — watched a college basketball game, then drove the short trip home toward Yuba City. They never arrived. Their car was found abandoned on a remote mountain road near Oroville: 19 miles in the wrong direction, high in the Plumas National Forest.

DEPTH 500 M

The car was undamaged — not even scratched underneath, meaning it had been driven carefully up a rough mountain road, not crashed or forced off it. A map was left inside. Their snacks and sodas sat untouched. It looked as though they'd parked deliberately — and walked away into the freezing dark on foot.

DEPTH 750 M

Months later, Ted Weiher's body was found in a Forest Service trailer, 19 miles from the car. He had starved to death — losing 80 to 100 pounds — despite military rations stored in that trailer, enough to keep him alive for a year. He never touched them. His shoes were missing. Gary Mathias's sneakers were sitting in the trailer. Gary himself was never found.

DEPTH 1000 M — THE BOTTOM

The other three were found scattered near the road. None of it has ever made sense: why drive up the mountain at all? Why abandon a perfectly drivable car? Why did Ted refuse the food that would have saved him? Where is Gary Mathias? The case is still open. Investigators call it the American Dyatlov Pass.

CASE FILE 07 · DELAWARE, OHIO · AUGUST 15, 1977

The Wow! Signal

For 72 seconds, a telescope heard something from deep space that matched nothing natural. It never repeated. Not once — in nearly fifty years.

✓ VERIFIED TRUE — documented real event

DEPTH 250 M

Jerry Ehman was volunteering at Ohio State's Big Ear radio telescope when the printout showed the sequence "6EQUJ5" — a 72-second narrowband signal near the hydrogen line, the exact frequency scientists had said an interstellar beacon would use. He circled it and wrote one word in the margin: "Wow!"

DEPTH 500 M

The signal had the textbook signature of an artificial transmission: a tight, narrow band, rising and falling exactly as the telescope's beam swept past its position in the constellation Sagittarius. It checked every box scientists had drawn up for first contact — except one.

DEPTH 750 M

It never happened again. Big Ear listened. The Very Large Array listened. Countless follow-up searches over decades — nothing. In 2017 one astronomer proposed that passing comets leaking hydrogen could mimic the signal, but later observations weakened the idea. Every natural explanation offered so far has failed to fully fit the data.

DEPTH 1000 M — THE BOTTOM

Seventy-two seconds. One detection. Nearly half a century of silence since. Either the universe said hello exactly once — or the strangest coincidence in the history of astronomy printed itself out on a volunteer shift in Ohio. Nobody has heard it twice.

CASE FILE 08 · ADELAIDE, AUSTRALIA · DECEMBER 1948 ★ NEW TODAY

The Tamam Shud Mystery

A well-dressed man was found dead on an Australian beach. No ID. Every label cut from his clothes. In his pocket: a scrap of paper reading 'Tamam Shud' — Persian for 'it is ended.'

✓ VERIFIED TRUE — documented real event

DEPTH 250 M

On the morning of December 1, 1948, a body was found slumped against the seawall at Somerton Beach, Adelaide. The man was well-dressed in a suit and polished shoes — but every clothing label had been carefully cut out, and he carried no wallet, no keys, nothing with a name.

DEPTH 500 M

The autopsy found no clear cause of death, though poisoning was suspected. Then came the strangest detail: sewn into a tiny fob pocket of his trousers, police found a tightly rolled scrap of paper torn from a book. On it, two words: 'Tamam Shud' — Persian for 'it is ended' or 'it is finished,' the final line of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam.

DEPTH 750 M

Months later, a copy of the Rubaiyat turned up — its final page torn out, matching the scrap. Inside the back cover, police found a sequence of letters that looked like a code. Codebreakers, intelligence agencies, and amateur sleuths attacked it for decades. It was never deciphered.

DEPTH 1000 M — THE BOTTOM

In 2022 — seventy-four years later — researchers at the University of Adelaide finally identified him through DNA genealogy as Carl 'Charles' Webb, a 43-year-old electrical engineer from Melbourne. But identification only deepened the hole: nobody knows why he was in Adelaide, why his labels were cut out, or what killed him.
