Should I buy my kid an AI talking toy — what should I check first?
AI toys are the industry’s wave — conversational companions, robotic dogs, LEGO SMART Play — but buying one needs a four-part checklist: privacy, guardrails, subscriptions, controls.
AI toys are the industry’s wave — conversational companions, robotic dogs, LEGO SMART Play — but buying one needs a four-part checklist: privacy, guardrails, subscriptions, controls.
Why this checklist matters
An AI talking toy is a cloud service with a microphone, living in your child’s bedroom and improvising its answers. Quality and safety vary enormously between makers, and the box rarely tells you the important parts. Ten minutes with these four checks tells you what you are bringing home.
The four checks, step by step
- Privacy: find the policy. Is your child’s voice recorded and stored? Used to train the company’s AI? Can you delete recordings? Vague answers count as a no.
- Guardrails: does the maker describe real content filtering and safety testing for children — backed by independent coverage, or only by the box?
- Subscriptions: what stops working without a monthly plan? Prefer toys whose talking and play survive without one.
- Controls: look for a parent app to review conversations and set limits — and a physical microphone off-switch beats a software toggle.
- Test it yourself first: ask tricky and personal questions (“where do you live?”) before your child does.
- Start it in a shared room while everyone gets used to it. Bedrooms can come later, if you are satisfied.
