Some operators sold equipment or shut down after crypto economics changed; others shifted toward AI because both businesses value abundant electricity, cooling, land, and data-center operations. Crusoe’s $3.9 billion raise illustrates how infrastructure once associated with energy-intensive computing can be redirected toward AI factories. The pivot is not automatic: AI needs different networking, reliability, accelerators, and customer contracts than a mining farm.

Why the miners did not just switch off

When crypto prices crashed and Ethereum stopped using mining in 2022, thousands of facilities were left holding the same three assets AI companies desperately need: huge power contracts, industrial cooling, and buildings full of electrical gear. Graphics cards could not train AI models competitively, but the sites themselves were gold.

What to do, step by step

  1. Separate the chips from the site. Miners sold or scrapped GPUs; the valuable part was megawatts already connected to the grid.
  2. Watch the queue: new data centers can wait years for a grid connection, which is why ready-made mining sites sold at a premium.
  3. Notice the winners were the miners who owned their facilities and power deals, not those renting space month to month.
Pro tip: The tell in any 'miner pivots to AI' headline: look for the megawatt figure, not the GPU count. If a release brags about chips but hides power capacity, the pivot is mostly marketing.
