Could your Discord messages show up in a Google search — and how do you opt out?

By Adam Neely · Oct 29, 2026
Quick answer: Discord is building public web pages for big Discoverable Servers, and individual messages written from mid-December onward could gradually appear in search. Private servers, DMs and group chats are not included, old messages will not be published, and you can opt out now in Settings, Data and Privacy.

You answer a game question in a big Discord group late at night, figuring only the folks in that group will ever see it. Short answer: soon, maybe Google too — but only for big public ‘Discoverable’ servers, only for new messages, and you can opt your own messages out now in Settings > Data and Privacy. Why it matters: Discord announced on October 27, 2026 that it is building a public web page for every Discoverable Server — communities anyone can join without an invite, with at least 1,000 members and at least 8 weeks old; Discord says there are more than 63,000 of them. Private servers, direct messages, and group chats are NOT included, and old messages will not be published retroactively. What to do, step by step:1.

Know the timeline: admin ‘Web Presence’ controls went live October 27; server web pages with discussion summaries start November 16, 2026 for conversations from that date; individual messages start appearing gradually in search from mid-December, only for messages written from then on.2. Opt yourself out: open Discord Settings, go to Data and Privacy, find the setting for Channel Messages in Discoverable Servers, and turn off sharing your messages to web search — in the US this is on by default for adults, and in the EU, UK, Canada, Brazil, Australia and South Korea individual-message publishing is off by default, with minors excluded entirely.3. If you run a server: Server Settings > Web Presence lets admins turn the feature off entirely or exclude individual channels.4.

Before posting in a big public server, look for the notice/icon that the channel may be shared to the web.Pro tip: Do not assume deleting your account later scrubs a message that already reached a search page — decide before you post, not after.Ad’s take: I like useful answers being findable — that is literally what my site tries to do — but a chat should feel like a chat. Take the two minutes, flip that setting to what YOU are comfortable with, and then post away.
