Google Maps and Apple Maps can save selected areas for offline use. Download your home region while you have internet, verify it opens in airplane mode, and refresh it periodically so road data does not expire or become stale.

Why downloading early is the whole trick

Offline maps only work if the data is already on your phone when service disappears. Downloaded areas keep street names, addresses, and turn by turn directions for driving, even with no signal at all. What they cannot do is fetch live traffic, closures, or a brand new area on the spot. Saving your home region, plus the routes you use most, while you have good internet is what makes the feature dependable later.

What to do, step by step

  1. Open your maps app on Wi-Fi, find your home area, and choose the download or offline option.
  2. Size the box to cover your town, workplace, and main routes, not just your own street.
  3. Download a second area for any place you visit often, such as a relative's town.
  4. Turn on airplane mode and test searching and directions, to prove the download really works offline.
  5. Set a reminder to refresh downloads every few months, since saved maps can expire or go stale.
Pro tip: Also save key addresses as named places before you travel. Offline search is weaker than online search, and a saved home, hotel, or hospital entry is far easier to tap than an address typed from memory.
