How could new laws in the EU and Australia change your social media feed?
Both proposals would give people and parents more say over whether algorithmic recommendations shape the default feed.
Two proposals push feeds away from “the platform decides.” The EU Kids Act, announced September 16, would ban under-13 accounts, allow supervised one-hour “mini accounts” for ages 13–14, extend safe-design duties to 18, and reverse parts of the burden of proof for platforms. It is a proposal, not current law. Australia’s September 8 “My Feed, My Way” draft would make personalized recommendations an opt-in choice and let users default to posts only from accounts they follow, with penalties up to A$109.2 million.
It follows Australia’s December 2025 under-16 account ban and would broaden child-safety duties to games and AI chatbots. For families, the practical question is whether a “For You” feed becomes a choice rather than the default.
