How close is real fusion power to running a data center?

By Adam Neely · Sep 22, 2026 · 6 min
Quick answer: The collaboration is a development path toward an on-site 20 MW system, not a commercial fusion plant running today.

The collaboration is a development path toward an on-site 20 MW system, not a commercial fusion plant running today.

nT-Tao and Orion say they will explore US sites for a compact fusion system intended to supply up to about 20 MW near customers such as data centers. The C3 prototype produced first plasma in January 2026, and nT-Tao added a 50 MW pulsed-power subsystem in September to push the experiment toward its next temperature milestone. That is meaningful engineering progress, but not a power plant: the companies still must show sustained fusion performance, energy gain, reliable heat-to-electric conversion, licensing, and commercial economics.

Treat the 20 MW figure as the target of a system under development, not electricity available today.
