EVs can turn the drive motor into a generator while slowing, sending some energy back to the battery. In one-pedal mode the car slows when you lift off the accelerator; anticipating stops can recover energy and reduce wear on friction brake pads.

Why smooth slowing puts energy back in the battery

Ordinary brakes turn motion into wasted heat. Regenerative braking instead runs the electric motor as a generator, slowing the car while sending some of that energy back to the battery. It cannot recover everything, and hard, late braking still needs the friction brakes. The gain comes from anticipation: gentle, early slowing gives the system more time to capture energy and is easier on passengers and brake pads.

What to do, step by step

  1. Find the regenerative braking setting in your car’s menus or paddles, and try a stronger level on a quiet road first.
  2. Look well ahead and lift off the accelerator early when traffic or a junction is slowing you down.
  3. Ease off gradually rather than snapping your foot off, so the slowdown feels smooth and predictable.
  4. Use the brake pedal normally whenever you need to stop faster — safety always comes before recovering energy.
  5. Expect less regeneration with a full or very cold battery, and leave extra distance in those conditions.
Pro tip: One-pedal driving still needs practice. Practise judging stopping distances on an empty road until lifting off, rolling, and using the brake pedal feel automatic together.
