How do I secure my smart home devices?

By Adam Neely
Quick answer: Unique passwords, current software, and careful account permissions protect smart devices better than hiding them on an obscure network name.

Change default passwords, install updates, enable two-step verification, and review camera and microphone access.

Why smart homes need securing at all

Every smart device is a small computer connected all day, often with a camera, microphone, or lock attached. Makers have shipped many with simple default passwords and slow updates, and attackers scan automatically for those weak spots. A compromised gadget can spy or attack other websites — and become a foothold inside your network, next to the laptop holding your banking. Good security closes the easy doors first.

What to do, step by step

  1. Inventory everything connected — bulbs, plugs, cameras, speakers — and remove anything you no longer use. Forgotten devices get forgotten updates.
  2. Change every default password, starting with the router. Use a password manager so each device and account gets a different, strong password.
  3. Turn on automatic updates for firmware and apps, router included. Many attacks use flaws fixed months earlier.
  4. Turn on two-step verification for cameras, doorbell, and lock accounts, and review who they are shared with. Remove old guests and former housemates.
  5. Put gadgets on your router's guest network if offered, use the strongest Wi-Fi security available, and place cameras thoughtfully, not in private rooms.
  6. Review app permissions: does a light-bulb app really need your location, contacts, or microphone? If not, turn that access off.
Pro tip: A separate guest network is the strongest single upgrade most homes can make. If a gadget is compromised, it stays walled off from your computers and phones.
