Why is my phone running so slow?

Why phones slow down over time

A phone needs free space and spare memory to breathe. As storage fills and apps pile on background tasks, everything competes for the same limited resources. Add an aging battery — which can no longer deliver power the way it used to — and even simple things begin to lag. Most of this is fixable in ten minutes.

What to do, step by step

1. Restart the phone properly. A full restart clears out stuck apps and half-finished processes that have been quietly hogging memory.
2. Free up storage. Delete apps you have not opened in months, old videos, and downloaded files, and aim to keep a few gigabytes free at all times.
3. Install system and app updates. Slowdowns are a common side effect of out-of-date software, and updates often include performance fixes.
4. Trim the extras: remove home-screen widgets you do not use, turn off live wallpapers, and restrict background activity for your heaviest apps.
5. Check battery health in Settings. If the battery is badly worn, a replacement often makes an older phone feel quick again, because the phone no longer has to protect itself.
6. Only if none of that helps: back everything up and do a factory reset. If it is still slow on a clean phone, the hardware itself has aged out.
