How do I connect a smart speaker to Wi-Fi?

By Adam Neely
Quick answer: Most smart speakers use the maker’s phone app and a temporary Bluetooth connection during setup.

Most smart speakers use the maker’s phone app and a temporary Bluetooth connection during setup.

Use the maker’s app, keep Bluetooth on during setup, and connect the speaker to the same network as your phone.

Why setup sometimes stalls

A smart speaker has no screen and no keyboard, so your phone does all the talking for it — the maker’s app hands the speaker your Wi-Fi name and password over a temporary Bluetooth connection. Most failed setups come down to three things: the phone was on the wrong network, the password got mistyped, or the speaker was too far from the router to hear it properly.

What to do, step by step

  1. Plug the speaker in near the router for setup — you can move it to its permanent spot afterwards.
  2. Install the maker’s app (Google Home, Amazon Alexa, or the speaker brand’s own app) and sign in or create the account it asks for.
  3. Put your phone on your home Wi-Fi — not mobile data, and not a guest network — and switch Bluetooth on.
  4. In the app, choose to add a new device and follow the prompts. Type the Wi-Fi password slowly; this is the step that fails most often.
  5. If the speaker will not connect, restart it and the router, move closer, and try once more. Many speakers prefer the 2.4 GHz band, which your router offers alongside 5 GHz.
  6. Once it answers you, move it to its room and give it a clear name like “Kitchen” in the app, so voice commands stay simple.
Pro tip: If setup keeps failing at the password, check the router sticker or your saved passwords — one wrong character looks exactly like a broken speaker.
