Robots move shelves to workers, sort packages, and palletize boxes; large operators run fleets of thousands. They shorten shipping times and take over repetitive, injury-prone jobs.

Why warehouses went robotic

Warehouses run on walking — in a traditional building, workers spend much of a shift traveling between shelves, and that travel is slow, tiring, and hard to scale when orders surge. Robots attack exactly that waste. By bringing goods to people and handling the heaviest repetitive lifts, they let a building ship more orders with fewer errors.

What to know

  1. Goods-to-person robots carry mobile shelving pods to a workstation, where a worker picks the item shown on screen. The person stays put; the inventory does the traveling.
  2. Sortation robots and conveyor systems read labels or barcodes and route each package toward the right truck, which is how an order placed at night can leave the next morning.
  3. Palletizing and heavy-lift robots stack boxes and move full pallets, taking over jobs most likely to strain backs and shoulders through sheer repetition.
  4. Behind the fleet, orchestration software assigns tasks, balances traffic so robots do not jam, and sends machines to charge.
  5. People remain essential: they handle odd-shaped items robots grip poorly, fix exceptions, maintain the fleet, and manage safety around machines that share the floor.
Pro tip: When you read that a retailer “added robots,” look for what changed for workers: the best deployments remove the longest walks and heaviest lifts first.
