What does the FDA's newly approved kidney cancer drug combo actually do?

By Adam Neely · Sep 25, 2026 · 9 min
Quick answer: Welireg plus Lenvima delayed progression and produced more tumor responses than cabozantinib in advanced clear-cell kidney cancer after immunotherapy, but it has not yet proved an overall-survival benefit.

Welireg plus Lenvima delayed progression and produced more tumor responses than cabozantinib in advanced clear-cell kidney cancer after immunotherapy, but it has not yet proved an overall-survival benefit.

The FDA approved WELIREG (belzutifan), a HIF-2 alpha inhibitor, with LENVIMA (lenvatinib), a kinase inhibitor, for adults with advanced clear-cell renal cell carcinoma that progressed after immunotherapy. In the 747-patient Phase 3 LITESPARK-011 trial, median progression-free survival was 14.6 months with the combination versus 10.6 months with cabozantinib—a 26% lower risk of progression or death—and tumors shrank in 53% versus 40%. Overall survival did not reach statistical significance at the final analysis, so this is not yet a proven life-extender or a cure.

It is a meaningful additional option after immunotherapy stops working, with serious side effects and eligibility questions that belong in an oncology visit.
