Why do so many useful robots roll on wheels instead of legs?

By Adam Neely · Sep 27, 2026 · 5 min
Quick answer: Wheeled robots trade a flashy walking demo for stability, range, and lower operating costs. Those practical advantages matter more in warehouses and factories.

Humanoid demos get attention, but many robots headed for warehouses use wheels. Japan’s ugo Nova is a wheeled, dual-arm semi-humanoid targeting 2027 mass production. Agility says its legged Digit 5 can lift 50 pounds, run for 90 minutes, recharge in nine minutes, and use new systems to work more safely near people.

Legs can handle stairs and uneven ground, but they consume more energy and make balance harder; wheels are simpler, cheaper to operate, and can carry more on smooth floors. The robot that eventually helps in ordinary buildings may look less like a person and more like a rolling work platform.
