A cold battery may accept DC fast charging much more slowly. On supported EVs, setting the fast charger as the built-in navigation destination starts warming the pack automatically; check the owner's manual because the trigger and timing vary by model.

Why a cold battery charges slowly

Lithium batteries are chemistry, and chemistry slows down in the cold. A cold-soaked pack cannot accept high charging power safely, so the car limits it — and the session crawls. Warming the pack on the drive there lets the battery take full speed sooner and treats it more gently while it does.

What to do, step by step

  1. Route to the charger with the car’s built-in navigation. On supported models this starts warming the battery automatically on the way.
  2. Give it time: warming can take 10 to 30 minutes of driving in winter. Set the destination when you leave, not at the last exit.
  3. In cold weather, charge at the end of a drive rather than first thing, when the pack is cold-soaked from sitting overnight.
  4. No navigation trigger? Check the car’s app or manual for a manual preconditioning or battery-warming option.
  5. Before a trip from home, use scheduled departure while plugged in — the car warms cabin and battery from wall power instead of your charge.
Pro tip: If a winter session starts slowly, stay plugged in. Charging speed usually climbs as the pack warms mid-session — unplugging in frustration just restarts the wait.
